2018 Gardening Show

Our Gardening Show started as a modest Seed & Bulb Exchange and has grown to what we believe may be the largest on-site event of its type in the country.

The continued success of our Exchange–the 14th Annual Gardening Show opened with an inventory of 10,000 packets of seed and an assortment of approximately 2,000 bulbs–relies on donations big and small from individual gardeners, as well as local and national businesses and organizations.

Want to be a part of the excitement?  Come to the show, be a donor!

Your paid $10 entrance fee gives you access to this gem of an exchange. You'll receive 5 Exchange tickets and the option to purchase additional tickets at 5 for $1.

Before the show on January 27, 2018, join us at one of our several seed cleaning sessions held through the autumn.

2017 Seed Cleaning Schedule

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned gardener, come on out and join us for our annual seed cleaning sessions!

Porter County Master Gardeners gather every year to prepare seeds for the Seed & Bulb Exchange portion of their annual Gardening Show. Tools and packaging materials provided, as well as seed heads and pods from a variety of plants. You may also bring your own saved seeds and learn how to clean and preserve those. Donations of seeds and bulbs to the annual Exchange will be accepted as well.

Seed & Bulb Exchange Contribution Guidelines

If you would like to contribute seeds to the exchange, please follow these guidelines. Ideally, seeds should be allowed to fully dry on the plant before harvesting. If this is not possible, cut the seed heads with a portion of the stem or stalk and store in paper bag to continue drying at normal room temperature and humidity which is sufficient to complete the drying process. Seeds and bulbs must be clean and disease free.

Packaging:

  • Package seeds 20-25 in paper envelopes (no plastic bags). Please use small envelopes or cut letter-size envelopes in half or in thirds.
  • Package bulbs 3-7 in paper bags (no softies, please).
  • Label each seed envelope and bag with plant name, description and planting instructions.
  • Include as much information as possible: perennial, annual, biennial; color; height and width; bloom time; full sun, part sun or shade.
  • Participants drop off packaged seeds and bulbs at the Seed & Bulb Exchange area and will receive 1 exchange ticket for each seed packet* and 3 exchange tickets for each bulb package.
  • No uncleaned or unpackaged seeds or bulbs will be accepted day of Show.

* We reserve the right to limit quantities of donations as well as seeds/bulbs exchanged for tickets. We accept no more than 50 seed packets or bulbs per paid admission. Of those 50 packets, no more than 25 of a single seed (e.g. marigolds) will be accepted.
